Report: GTA 6 Could Potentially Cost £80 as Industry Expects Rockstar to Increase Game Prices

A recent annual report on the video game industry has sparked interest by suggesting that Rockstar may sell the highly anticipated game, GTA 6, for $100, which is around £80. The report highlights the substantial budget of the game, pointing out that this price point would align with a previous move by GTA publisher Take-Two to increase game prices at the beginning of the current console generation.
Authored by Matthew Ball of Epyllion, the report indicates a growing sentiment within the industry that game prices need to reflect the escalating development costs, pushing towards an average price point of around £80/$100.
With the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2020, the average price of boxed game releases in the UK has already risen to approximately £70. Many high-budget game releases now offer premium editions at even higher prices, enticing customers with additional in-game content or early access.
Despite these trends, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad has expressed skepticism about the potential price increase for GTA 6. He argues that the ongoing success of GTA 5, particularly through GTA Online’s revenue stream, may negate the need for a higher upfront price for the game.
In a recent post on X, Ahmad stated, “I’d be surprised if this happens.” He suggests that Take-Two could even consider lowering the price to attract more players, given the significant earnings from GTA Online. Ahmad also highlights the fact that many players opt for premium editions with added bonuses, which could offset the need for a price hike.
Shawn Layden, former chairman of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, also weighed in on the discussion about rising game costs. He expressed concerns about the industry’s current trajectory, describing AAA gaming as a “cathedral business” that may have already grown too large to sustain further expansion.
As speculation continues about the pricing of GTA 6 and the broader trends in the video game market, industry experts and players alike are closely watching how these developments will unfold.
