“Modder Faces Copyright Claim for Porting GTA 6 Map into GTA 5”

The attempt to introduce a playable version of GTA 6’s map into GTA 5 through a mod has hit a snag as Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, has issued a copyright removal request to the creator’s YouTube channel.
The mod, crafted by YouTuber Dark Space, aimed to bring the much-anticipated GTA 6 map to life within GTA 5 by leveraging the work of the Mapping Vice City project. This community-led initiative scrutinized all available official media and merged findings with previously leaked map coordinates to recreate GTA 6’s map.
Dark Space began documenting his progress on social media earlier this year, and a version 1.0 of his mod, using GTA 5 assets, was recently released. However, the project hit a roadblock as Take-Two’s legal team took action against Dark Space’s YouTube channel with a copyright takedown request.
Expressing his disappointment in a new video, Dark Space explained, “I spent months constructing a fan-made GTA 6-inspired map within GTA 5 out of sheer passion, not for profit. Shortly after sharing the project video, Take-Two Interactive removed it without warning or discussion.”
Following the removal, Dark Space voluntarily took down the download link. He speculated in his video that the accuracy of his map might have led to the takedown by Take-Two.
In an interview with IGN, Dark Space admitted he was prepared for Take-Two’s response, considering past mod takedowns. He understood Take-Two’s perspective, saying, “I think my map could have spoiled the surprise of their own map, and I can see why they would want it removed.”
Take-Two has a history of clashes with the GTA modding community, having recently halted the Liberty City Preservation Project, a mod recreating GTA 4’s map in GTA 5. However, in a surprising move, Take-Two has collaborated with Cfx.re, the team behind popular GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM mods, to develop an official “conversion tool” for bringing GTA 5 mods to the new PC version of GTA 5 Enhanced.
Despite ongoing rumors of delays, GTA 6 is reportedly still on track for a fall 2025 release, as announced by Take-Two. However, a third-party accessories company recently suggested that the PC version may not be available until early next year.
