Rockstar Considering Creating Custom Experiences in GTA 6, Similar to Roblox

Renowned game developer Rockstar is rumored to be venturing into the creation of a cutting-edge metaverse-style gaming experience. Allegedly, the company has been engaged in talks with key creators from popular titles such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Grand Theft Auto (GTA) to collaboratively design custom experiences within the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.
According to a report by Digiday, sources close to the matter, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that these proposed experiences would enable creators to customize the game’s environment and assets, integrating their unique intellectual properties into the world of GTA 6. This could potentially involve a creator’s brand sponsorship.
The news of these purported discussions follows Rockstar’s acquisition in 2023 of the team behind the well-received GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM multiplayer mods, Cfx.re. This team had previously faced a ban from playing GTA 5 in 2015.
The report indicates that the nature of these talks has been somewhat open-ended, with uncertainties surrounding how creators would benefit from incorporating their IP and audiences into GTA 6, aside from the exposure gained within one of the gaming world’s most popular franchises.
In other metaverse platforms, creators, often identified as user-generated content (UGC) creators, can earn money through virtual item sales or revenue sharing programs.
Eurogamer has approached Rockstar for a response to Digiday’s report.
The release of GTA 6 is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S sometime this autumn, a timeline that Take-Two, the publisher, remains confident about. Recently, a peripheral manufacturer hinted at the PC version of GTA 6 launching early next year.
